Victorians were fascinated by anything mechanical, and the appeal of the Skeleton Clock was that every facet of the clock was visible.   Adding to the allure of the Skeleton Clock was the intriguing mechanical design where one may watch the inner activity of the skeleton clock at work.

    Skeleton Clocks

In 1851 The Great Exhibition "in London" was the first to present a Skeleton Clock which then became extremely popular in Victorian England.  The appeal of this clock was that every detail of the inner workings was visible from all angles to persons viewing the clock. Clock makers to facilitate this design cut away plates and polished the brass to a bright mirror finish of every segment of the clock, all covered by a glass dome.

Skeleton Clocks are the most intriguing and most delightful of all clocks.  They exhibit a fascinating, mechanical structure where one may inspect the internal animation of the skeleton clock at work.  Clock makers, to make the viewing possible, removed the  parts which usually cover the inner-most workings of the clock or significantly modified the said parts so as to display these inner parts.  The Skeleton Clock is primarily created to be a showcase design and deliberately leaves visible the assorted wheels, springs and gears within the movement itself. There is no statutory definition of a skeleton clock per se, but considerable portions of the main parts of the timekeeper should be openly evident most often from both the  back of the clock, and from the front as well for the clock to be acknowledged and approved as a skeleton clock. The parts most frequently displayed by a skeleton design are those revealing either the most movement or the most-captivating formation. These may involve, but not restricted to the mainspring, escapement, balance wheel and balance spring, and tourbillon which is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement. Customarily, either the dial is clear or there is no dial present in a skeleton clock, or the dial encircles the circumference of the cabinet to provide a mounting surface for the hour markers.  Skeleton clocks are extremely intriguing because they predominantly have no case. The inner workings of the clocks are entirely exposed, so in a sense one can see the "skeleton" of the clock. Skeleton clocks became fashionable, distinct, and engrossing back at the time of what we now call antique clocks. These clocks, with an original label, are highly prized collectors articles and are lots of fun to own and collect. As a rule brass is, the metal of choice in the manufacturing of these  clocks, but a remarkably few of them had wooden workings on the inside. The metal especially brass could be polished to a high-gloss finish.  Skeleton clocks could be a hobby all in their own right for serious collectors, owing to the sheer variety that one can acquire when one can only view  the inner workings of a clock. Clocks look quite different with no case, which is part of the fun of owning and collecting skeleton clocks.
