Quartz Cuckoo Clocks

While not traditionally a Black Forest Clock, the Quartz Cuckoo Clock provides the look and tradition of the Black Forest Cuckoo Clock with the added convenience of being battery powered. On one set of batteries quartz cuckoos can last for approximately one year, but this depends on the batteries used.   Larger-animated parts will draw more power from the batteries, and "therefore", may reduce the length of time the batteries will last.  Quartz Cuckoos are not classed as an authentic Cuckoo Clocks because of the use of batteries.   Also, Quartz Cuckoo Clocks do not include the actual bellows and reeds which is the means to announce the sound of the cuckoo in authentic cuckoo clocks, and which generate the sound of the striking clock. While the Cuckoo sound in a weight driven clock is provided with wind and bellows, the sound in a Quartz Cuckoo Clock is a digital recording of a Cuckoo bird in the wild.  
In the Quartz Cuckoo Clock on the hour, the cuckoo bird  emerges  and flaps the wings.  However, instead of the mechanically originated call, the Quartz clock uses the recorded sound of a real, European Cuckoo bird. When the door opens and the cuckoo emerges one can also hear the sound of running water along with the cuckoo itself.   When the Cuckoo calls the time other figures "if included" on the clock also move.
Quartz Cuckoo Clocks are unique.  Inside of the clock is a photo-cell, light sensor which automatically shuts off the sounds at night.  When the lights go off for the night, then at the same time the call of the Cuckoo is also turned off.

There are three styles of Cuckoo Clocks:

A simple wooden Alpine hut in Switzerland used for many years by sheep and goat herders is called a "Chalet"   This single word is the only Swiss addition to Cuckoo clocks.  The charming clocks In the latter part of the  nineteenth century, were highly prized by tourists and became extremely popular in Switzerland.  Travelers loved the elegant articles as Swiss souvenirs.  Three basic styles of chalets are used to make the Cuckoo Clocks, and two of them originate in the Swiss Alps.  The village of Brienz in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland gave its name to one style of chalet, while the other chalet shape is Emmental also an area in Switzerland, and which has a steep roof with a large overhang that almost reaches to the ground.    A Bavarian chalet also has a steep roof and overhanging eaves.  The Bavarian Chalet Cuckoo Clock is the most popular model for the addition of a Swiss music box which plays various melodies.  Often the wooden outer shell of the clock is decorated with carved leaves, birds and animal heads.  On most Cuckoo Clocks Roman numerals are displayed around the dial.

Hunter Cuckoo Clock

The Hunter or Deer head Clock is a square shaped box which accommodate a small carved Cuckoo bird inside, and outside  the clock is displayed a traditional hunting scene. The head of a buck deer complete with carved antlers is  positioned at the top of the clock in the center. Arrayed around the the dial of the clock often are dead game animals and crossed shotguns .  As with the other cuckoo clocks the Hunter Clock has a pendulum and weights beneath the clock.
