 Cuckoo Clock History

Philipp Hainhofer (21 July 1578-6147) lived in Augusburg, many years before clock carving began in the Black Forest.  He was a merchant, banker, diplomat and an art collector.  Hainhofer wrote about a cuckoo clock owned by Prince Elector August Von Sachsen.  This is the first, known description of a Cuckoo Clock.   Europe then was in the middle of a weather phenomenon known as the “Little Ice Age”.  This phenomenon brought extremely cold temperatures in the winter.

One Day Cuckoo Clocks

One Day Cuckoos are pendulum driven and need winding every 24-30 hours.  Every hour a small door in the clock opens to expose the small cuckoo bird which proclaims the hour by calling the correct number of Cuckoo sounds.  On the half hour, the cuckoo bird emerges and calls only one time.

Eight Day Cuckoo Clocks

Eight Day Cuckoos are pendulum driven and need winding every 24-30 hours.  Every hour a small door in the clock opens to expose the small cuckoo bird which proclaims the hour by calling the appropriate number of Cuckoo sounds.    On the half hour, the cuckoo bird emerges and calls only one time.

 One Day Musical Cuckoo Clocks

One Day Musical Cuckoo Clocks contain two quality mechanical movements which need to be adjusted every 24-30 hours.  On the hour the cuckoo bird will announce the hour with the appropriate number of calls, and then a melody plays.  Two tunes are usually offered with the aid of a Swiss music box where a rotating drum plucks the notes.

Eight Day Musical Cuckoo Clocks

The Eight Day Musical Cuckoo Clocks are almost the same internally as the one Day Musical Cuckoo Clocks. Eight day musical Cuckoo Clocks contain two mechanical movements which depend on being wound every 8 days. The difference between the one and eight day clocks is in the the size of the weights under the clock which are heavier in the eight day clock. Cuckoo clocks are almost always weight driven; a very few are driven using a spring.

Grandfather Cuckoo Clocks

A touch of nobility will enhance your home when you place this selection against the wall.  Small models adorn the apex of the timepiece, and trees range the sides of  the frame.  Beneath the wooden pendulum, and weights a mother bear ambles with her cubs, and elaborate carvings are spread across the bottom of the clock.  Absolutely magnificent, this timekeeper truly affirms grandiosity.

Quartz Cuckoo Clocks

Quartz Cuckoo Clocks use a regular clock mechanism, but need to draw the needed power from batteries. On one set of batteries quartz cuckoos can run for approximately one year, but this depends on the type of batteries used.   Larger animated parts will draw more power from the batteries, and thus may decrease the length of time the batteries will last. Quartz Cuckoos are not classed as an authentic Cuckoo Clocks because of the use of batteries.

Evolution of Clocks

“Necessity is the Mother of Invention”, or so the saying goes. Hundreds of years ago it became necessary for humanity to organize their time into a chronological orderly system. As far back as the eighth century Hesiod wrote about  celestial bodies in conjunction with the growing of crops. Crops must be harvested when certain stars were rising and the fields should be plowed when the stars go down.

Oversized Wall Clocks

One can complement an otherwise bare space and keep accurate time, with a piece of art. A Large Wall Clock is so intriguing and effective. The Mantel Clock

The whole idea of the mantle clock was for the clock to be placed on the mantelpiece and is similar in looks to the bracket clock but in most cases is much smaller. As time elapsed and the mantelpiece became smaller and thinner, so the antique mantle clock also became thinner and smaller. Today's bare minimum architecture in new homes, many without the mantelpiece, is a disaster for our antique mantle clock displays!

Radio Controlled Clocks

A radio controlled clock or "Atomic Clock" keeps close to perfect time by synchronizing automatically to a radio signal emitted from the U.S. Atomic Clock in Colorado. Radio controlled clocks reset daily to the split second, and adjust automatically to Daylight Savings Time, Leap Year and Time Zone Changes.

Skeleton Clocks

In 1851 Great Exhibition in London was the first to display a Skeleton Clock which then became extremely popular in Victorian England. The appeal of this clock was that every detail of the inner workings was visible from all angles to persons viewing the clock. This was facilitated by the cut away plates and the fine mirror finish of every segment of the clock, all covered by a glass dome.

Galileo Thermometers

Galileo thermometers so named for the Italian physicist Galileo Galilei, are awe-inspiring creations that accurately display the 400 year old principle of relative density. Encased in shining glass this is an accurate indoor thermometer. The Galileo thermometer is a conception where science becomes art, and a thing of beauty becomes fun.  Galileos are precisely manufactured.

Wall Clocks of the Ages

There was a time when almost all clocks were either tower clocks or tall, long case, grandfather clocks. Nowadays there are countless styles and shapes of wall clocks.

In the early stages of mechanical development, clocks were weight driven. Considering the distance the weights had to travel, the clock makers built an extremely tall case to house their clocks. In these early days, the clock movements were ineffectual and bulky because they were all handmade. Many of the early tall clocks were known to be over 8 ft. tall, weights for these clocks were also very large and cumbersome.
